The dual-grid system
Two grids, two levels of precision
Engineering graph paper superimposes two coordinate grids of different densities on the same sheet:
Common configurations: 1 cm primary + 2 mm sub-increment (5:1 ratio), or 1 cm primary + 1 mm sub-increment (10:1 ratio). CustomGraph lets you independently set both grid sizes and colors.
Use cases
Who uses engineering graph paper?
Field data collection
Engineers collecting data outdoors — on laminated stock resistant to rain and dust — use engineering paper for fast coarse recording on the primary grid and precise values on the sub-increment grid.
Circuit schematics
Electronics engineers sketch circuit schematics and PCB layouts using the coarse grid for component spacing and the fine sub-increment grid for lead pitch and pad sizing.
Structural engineering
Preliminary structural sketches, beam cross-sections, and site plan layouts drawn on engineering paper for quick hand calculations alongside the drawing at a defined scale.
Overhead projector slides
Engineering paper was designed from the start for overhead transparency slides. Medium-heavy line weight on transparency film projects clearly onto a screen in a lecture theatre.
Physics and chemistry labs
University lab reports often require hand-drawn graphs on engineering paper. The sub-increment grid allows ±0.5 mm data point accuracy, important for trend line fitting and gradient calculation.
Technical annotation
When engineers annotate drawings with dimensions and notes, the sub-increment grid provides a baseline for neat lettering. Often printed on heavier stock (90–120 gsm) for durability.
Color combinations
Recommended dual-grid color pairings
The primary grid should be darker and more saturated than the sub-increment grid so both are immediately distinguishable at a glance.
