Application Overview:

The Custom Graph Paper application is a powerful application that is easy to use and can generate more than 800 million different Graphing sheets and Overhead Slides.  This version if the Custom Graph Paper application creates Linier, Semi-Log, and Log-Log graphing sheets in a number of colors, sizes, formats, and grid configurations.  The graph sheet can be created with output parameters that include five Sizes, two Orientations, two Justifications, and five Line Weights.  These output parameters are on top of a host of grid sizes and styles.  This application produces crisp and sharp graphing sheets with line thicknesses from ultra thin to fairly wide lines.  The medium size line formats works well on most printers while the ultra thin lines are only limited by the quality of the printer that puts them on paper or an overhead slides.

Linier Graph Paper

There are two choices for different types of linier graph paper, Cartesian and Engineering.   With several options such as color, grid size, and unit of measure to produce a large number of custom graphing sheets.  Click here to go to the application to create Linier Graph Paper.

·         Cartesian Graph Paper:
Cartesian Graph Paper is the simplest and most common graph paper in use today.  It’s most distinguishing feature is that it has a uniform square grid made of intersecting perpendicular lines.  You can adjust your graph sheets with two settings for units of measure, choose from eight different primary colors, and a grid size ranging from 1 to 25 lines per inch or a grid with lines separated from 1 to 25 millimeters.  Click here to see a sample Cartesian Graph sheet.

·         Engineering Graph Paper:
Engineering Graph Paper differs from Cartesian Graph Paper in that it has a multiple width grid.  The grid for these graphing sheets has additional options to choose from over the Cartesian options.  There is a selection of two different grid settings, the primary grid and a second sub increment grid size.  The first grid setting is for the wider of the two differing width grid lines.  Common settings for this grid setting are usually 5 or 10 time as wide as the sub-increment setting.  For example; if you are choosing in inches you might choose 1 per inch for the primary grid and 10 per inch for the sub-increment setting or if you are choosing in millimeters you could choose 10 mm or 20mm for the primary grid and 2 mm for the sub-increment grid.  These settings give you five to one and ten to one variations in the grid size.  This allows you to more easily find the correct location to record a graph node while recording data or to determine where graph nodes are on the graph while observing graphed data.
Along with the two grid settings, you can choose any combination of eight colors for each of the two different grid sizes.  My favorites color combinations are green with orange, red with blue, and black or charcoal with gray.  This gives you 64 different combinations of colors to choose from.  These color combinations also help you quickly distinguish the difference between the two different grid settings.  Click here to see a sample Engineering Graph sheet.

Semi-Log Graph Paper

The distinguishing characteristic about Semi-Log graphing sheets is that the grid along one of the axes is linier and the grid along the other axis is logarithmic.  You have the choice of having the logarithmic grid run along the Vertical Axis or the Horizontal Axis.  There are a host of options to choose with this type graphing sheet.  For the linier grid, you can choose from the same choices that you did for linier grid graphing sheets with either one or two color combinations and single or multiple grid sizes.  And in addition to those choices, the logarithmic axis has three additional option sets to choose from.  You can choose from 1 to 12 cycles, logarithmic bases from 2 to 16, and the direction of the logarithmic grid, Horizontal or Vertical.  The most common base choice is base 10 for such thing as sound volume, the hardness of materials, and the strength of an earth quake.  The second most common is base two for statistical studies.  Click here to go to the application to create Semi-Log Graph Paper, or click here to see a sample Semi-Log Graph sheet.

·         Direction:
Choose the log direction along either the vertical or horizontal axis.

·         Cycles:
Select from one to 12 cycles.  The density of sub-increments automatically adjusts as the distance between primary increments are compressed as higher numbers of cycles are selected.  Sub-increments are set to increments of 20, 10, 5, 2, 1, and zero sub-increments per primary cycle increment.  This list of sub-increments allow for easy visual recognition of the significance of the position of the sub-increments lines between each of the primary increment lines along the axis of travel.

·         Log Base:
Adjusting the log base allows creating graphs with base significance ranging from 2 through 16.   The most popular being base 10 and base 2.

Log-Log Graph Paper

The most distinguishing characteristic about Log-Log graphing sheets is that the grid along both axes is logarithmic.  There are additional adjustments that can be made with this type graphing sheet.  Cycles can be either locked together in such that they form a square grid or can be selected independently from each other.   Additionally the log-base can be chosen independently for each axis when choosing independent cycles.  If the grids are locked to be square, the second cycle and log-base settings are ignored.  Click here to go to the application to create Log-Log Graph Paper , or click here to see a sample Log-Log Graph sheet.

·         Independent Cycles:
Independently choose the number of cycles and bases along each of the axes.   There is a selection of from 1 to 12 cycles in bases from 2 to 16 that can be set independently along each of the axes.

·         Dependent / Square Grid:
When choosing this option and setting the axis direction to apply your cycle setting, you are limiting or extending the cycle settings of the remaining axis to produce an equally distributed grid.  For example; if you choose two cycles along the horizontal axis of a portrait orientated sheet, the shortest length, then the cycles of the vertical axis will be increased to fill in the additional area beyond your cycle setting until reaching the boarder.  This option was allowed so that the entire sheet could be utilized for the graph while rendering a square or equally proportioned grid.   Click here to see a sample Log-Log Graph sheet with the grid locked square.

Colors:

There is a selection of eight different colors for each of two different grid settings.   The first color chosen is the primary color of the graph sheet and will show up in the boarder and wider graph lines.  The second color shows up in the narrowest sub-segment lines on the graph.  For example; when creating Engineering graph paper, the first color will show up in the larger grid size and the boarder lines while the second color is used for the second or smaller grid setting.  Generally it is best to use the softer or lighter colors such as orange, or gray for the smaller grid which makes the harder or darker color stand out more.  Some colors tend to lend themselves in both positions such as Red and Blue which work equally well in both positions.  All of the color combinations are correct in different circumstances as long as they work for the situation you are working with.

Justifications:
There are two choices for Justification in the Linier and Semi-Log grid graph formats, Center and Left/Bottom.  These settings only apply to the linier portion of the graphing lines, and do not apply to the Semi-log and Log-Log grid lines.

·         Center:
Center Justification places the centermost grid line in the absolute horizontal and vertical centers of the graph paper.  The grid then works itself outward from the center in the equally selected increments to the sides and to the top and bottom of the page.  This is ideal for graphs that have a center or origin and move outward from that point.

·         Left / Bottom:
Left justification orientates the grid lines of the graph paper to start at the left and bottom edges of the page.  This allows the labeling of the graph paper to run along the left edge and bottom of the graph paper grid for graphs that gave a defined starting point.

Line Weights:

You have a selection of five different line weights.  The medium line weight works well for most general grade printers.  The thin and ultra-thin settings require a better grade or newer printer to reduce to their true dimensions.  When tested in a good grade printer each of five line widths were crisply distinguishable from each other.  They are however, limited by the printing devise that decodes and prints the image.
