About isometric paper

Three axes, no perspective

Isometric graph paper has a grid of equilateral triangles arranged at 60° angles, forming three sets of parallel lines: horizontal, 60° right-slanting, and 60° left-slanting. These three directions correspond to the x, y, and z axes of an isometric projection, each at 120° from the others.

Unlike perspective drawing (where parallel lines converge at a vanishing point), isometric projection keeps all parallel lines truly parallel. This means measurements remain accurate across the drawing — a critical property for technical illustration.

Isometric projection is widely used in architecture, engineering, game design, and mathematics because it is the simplest method of drawing three-dimensional objects that preserves measurable proportions.

All edges measurable. Parallel lines stay parallel.

A3 isometric paper

A3 isometric paper

A3 (297 × 420 mm) is the most popular paper size for isometric drawing because the larger surface allows more complex three-dimensional compositions. It is equivalent to two A4 sheets joined at the long edge.

Architects, game designers, and technical illustrators prefer A3 isometric paper for building elevation studies, multi-room game maps, and detailed product cross-sections where A4 would be too small.

The CustomGraph isometric PDF is vector-based — print on A3, or scale to A4 or larger without any loss of sharpness.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is isometric graph paper?+
Isometric graph paper has a grid of equilateral triangles at 60° angles, providing three drawing axes (x, y, z) each at 120° from the others. It is used for isometric (axonometric) projection of three-dimensional objects without perspective distortion.
Why is A3 isometric paper popular?+
A3 (297×420 mm) gives double the drawing area of A4. For complex 3D compositions — buildings, maps, detailed product illustrations — the larger canvas significantly reduces crowding. A3 is especially popular among architects and game designers.
What is the difference between isometric and regular graph paper?+
Regular Cartesian paper has a square grid with two perpendicular axes. Isometric paper has a triangular grid with three axes at 120° from each other. Cartesian is for 2D coordinate geometry; isometric is for 3D axonometric drawing.
Is isometric paper the same as triangular dot paper?+
They serve the same purpose but look different. Isometric dot paper shows only grid intersection points as dots. Isometric line paper shows the full connecting grid lines. Line paper makes aligning objects to the grid easier; dot paper gives a cleaner look for finished drawings.
Can I print isometric paper on a standard home printer?+
Yes for A4 and Letter sizes. For A3, you need a printer with A3 capability or a print shop. The PDF downloaded from this generator is vector-based, so it prints sharply at any DPI.
