About dot grid paper

Evenly spaced dots, infinite possibility

Dot grid paper places a small dot at every grid intersection, leaving the rest of the page blank. Unlike square grid paper — where lines visually dominate the page — dot paper gives you a clean, uncluttered surface. The dots guide your hand invisibly, keeping spacing consistent without drawing the eye away from your work.

The result is a page that feels as open as plain white paper but lets you draw straight lines, align text, and maintain even spacing with complete precision. This is why dot grid paper became the dominant format for bullet journaling, hand lettering, and sketchnoting.

CustomGraph generates dot paper as a true vector PDF. Each dot is a precise mathematical point, not a pixel — so the output prints at perfect sharpness on any printer.

Bullet journaling

The dot grid is the standard format for bullet journals. The 5 mm dot spacing fits most pen widths and heading sizes perfectly.

Hand lettering & calligraphy

Dots keep letter heights and baseline spacing consistent without the visual noise of ruled lines, ideal for brush pen work and calligraphy practice.

Sketching & wireframing

UX designers use dot paper for lo-fi wireframes — the dots help align boxes and labels without making the sketch look like a grid printout.

Dot paper variants

Dot grid, isometric dot, and more

Square dot grid

Dots arranged in a regular square grid at 5 mm spacing — the standard format for bullet journals. Equivalent to 5 mm graph paper with the lines removed.

Isometric dot paper

Dots at 60° triangular grid intersections. Used for 3D sketching, architecture, and game maps — with a cleaner visual appearance than isometric lines.

Dense dot grid (3.5 mm)

A tighter 3.5 mm spacing for calligraphy, micro-planning, and detailed layouts. Dense enough to guide pen lettering precisely while remaining invisible in photographs.

FAQ

Dot grid paper questions

What is dot grid paper?+
Dot grid paper has a regular grid of small dots instead of continuous lines. The dots mark grid intersections — giving you all the alignment benefits of graph paper while keeping the page looking clean and uncluttered. It is the most popular format for bullet journaling.
What spacing is best for bullet journaling?+
5 mm is the standard bullet journal dot spacing, used by Leuchtturm1917, Rhodia, and most branded BuJo notebooks. It accommodates normal handwriting, headings, and most drawing styles. If you write small, 3.5 mm gives more space per page.
What is isometric dot paper?+
Isometric dot paper places dots at the intersections of a 60° triangular grid rather than a square grid. It serves the same purpose as isometric line paper — three-dimensional sketching, architecture planning, and game map design — but the dot version gives a cleaner appearance.
What dot size should I choose?+
Standard (0.8 mm) is the most common and works well for most pens. Fine (0.5 mm) is nearly invisible in photographs — ideal if you want the dots to disappear after scanning. Bold (1.2 mm) is easier to see under poor lighting or with thicker pens.
