About lined paper

Ruling standards explained

Lined (ruled) paper has horizontal lines spaced at a standard interval to guide handwriting. The spacing between lines is called the ruling. Different ruling standards were developed for different handwriting sizes and contexts.

The most common rulings are college ruled (6.35 mm / ¼ inch) for compact notes, wide ruled (8.47 mm / ⅓ inch) for general use, and Gregg ruled (9.525 mm / ⅜ inch) for shorthand and large handwriting.

Common uses

When to use lined paper

Handwriting practice

Primary and elementary schools use wide-ruled lined paper for handwriting instruction. The wide spacing helps young writers form letters consistently.

Notes & essays

College-ruled paper at 6.35 mm or 5 mm fits the most lines per page — ideal for lecture notes, essay drafts, and study summaries.

Journaling & writing

Wide ruled or medium ruled paper is popular for personal journals, daily diaries, and creative writing — the larger spacing encourages relaxed handwriting.

FAQ

Lined paper questions

What is the difference between college ruled and wide ruled?+
College ruled paper has lines spaced 6.35 mm (¼ inch) apart. Wide ruled paper has lines spaced 8.47 mm (⅓ inch) apart. College ruled fits more lines per page and is standard for high school and university. Wide ruled is used in primary school and by anyone with larger handwriting.
Is lined paper the same as ruled paper?+
Yes — "lined paper", "ruled paper", "notebook paper", and "writing paper" all describe the same thing: paper with horizontal lines at a regular interval.
Can I add a margin line to the lined paper?+
Yes. CustomGraph's lined paper generator lets you choose a left margin width: none, standard (25 mm), or wide (32 mm). The margin is drawn as a vertical red line, matching the format of standard notebook paper.
What ruling should I print for my child?+
For early learners (ages 4–7), use wide ruled (8.47 mm) or wider. Ages 8–12 typically transition to wide ruled. From high school onward, college ruled (6.35 mm) is standard.
